Stress Management

Can too much stress makes us ill?

It has long been known that stress accounts for a huge amount of illness in today’s culture. According to statistics approximately 70 per cent of major and minor aliments are the results of prolonged amounts of stress e.g. high blood pressure, migraines, irritable bowel, and allergies.

Scientists and medical practitioners have known for a long time that negative and positive emotions really can alter the chemistry of our bodies, and these changes can have a negative or positive effect on the immune system. Prolonged amounts of stress can cause the body to produce more cortisol and adrenalin which are hormones made by the adrenal glands. These two hormones produce a burst of energy as part of the 'fight or flight' response, and of course this chemical reaction is an essential tool for survival.  Long periods of emotional and psychological pressures, may result in the over-production of these hormones which in turn can begin to weaken the immune system as these hormones reduce the level of T-helper cells, and reduce the production of natural killer cells.

what to expect during the treatment?

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of stress in your life. This may take time to reveal the true source of stress triggers as they are not always obvious. Therefore an in depth consultation is completed and by using various complementary treatments the therapist can assist the client to manage their own stress by using coping strategies and increased relaxation.
